OSCARS

 Academy Awards

Introduction

Commonly known as Oscars, it is a prestigious award that recognises personalities with artistic and technical merit in the movie industry. It is presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It was founded in 1927, but the presentation was first started in 1929, and winners since then receive a gold-plated statuette commonly called Oscar.

The award plays an important role in the rise of the winner significantly as he or she gets better work offers, pay hike, and media recognition.

The event takes place in Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

SELECTION

The members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences can only nominate and vote for the winners. As a film production is divided into various branches for its making, the nominees are chosen by the members of the branch. To determine the best picture, the entire academy panel nominates and votes.

VIEWERSHIP

The Academy Award presentation was first broadcast in the US in 1953 and internationally in 1969. It is considered a major happening in the film fraternity across the globe and is watched by millions.

As it kept gaining popularity, the red carpet interviews and presentations became an integral part of the event.

GOLD STATUETTE

The credit for the design of the award statue goes to Cedric Gibbons, the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer art director. Earlier, it was cast in bronze with gold plating and later, was made of plastic because of the shortage of metal during World War II. Currently, the statues are made of gold-plated britannium, which stands 13.5 inches and weighs 3.8 kg.

The true origin of the nickname "Oscar" has never been determined as there have been many stories attached to various sources.

History

The first Academy Awards presentation was held on May 16, 1929, at a private dinner function at The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with an audience of about 270 people.

The post-awards party was held at the Mayfair Hotel.[13][9] The cost of guest tickets for that night's ceremony was $5 ($79 at 2020 prices). Fifteen statuettes were awarded, honoring artists, directors and other participants in the film-making industry of the time, for their works during the 1927–28 period. The ceremony ran for 15 minutes.

For this first ceremony, winners were announced to the media three months earlier. For the second ceremony in 1930, and the rest of the first decade, the results were given to newspapers for publication at 11:00 pm on the night of the awards. In 1940, the Los Angeles Times announced the winners before the ceremony began; as a result, the following year the Academy started using a sealed envelope to reveal the names of the winners.

The term "Oscar" is a registered trademark of the AMPAS; however, in the Italian language, it is used generically to refer to any award or award ceremony, regardless of which field.

Interesting facts about the Academy awards

The first Academy Awards were presented on May 16, 1929, in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

The Best Actress award went to Janet Gaynor, and the Best Actor award went to Emil Jannings. These were the first honorees of the awards.

The Oscar trophy is a substantial eight and a half pounds.

The statuette cannot be sold by winners or their successors "without first offering to sell it to the Academy for the sum of $1.00," under the rules of the Academy.

The golden statue's initial name was not what it is known now. The "Academy Award of Merit" was the first name of the honor.

The Oscar statues were taken from their transport truck in 2000. A rubbish trader later discovered the statues in the trash.

The first color film to win the Best Picture gong was 'Gone With The Wind' in 1940.
