A Song That Became a Movement
Vande Mataram is one of the most important symbols of India's freedom struggle.
Its story began as a literary composition and gradually became a song of patriotism, a slogan of protest and finally India's National Song.
📜 1875 — The Beginning
Bankim Chandra Chatterjee composed Vande Mataram.
It was first published in Bangadarshan on 7 November 1875.
Later, Bankim included it in his famous novel Anandamath, published in 1882.
The song praised the motherland as Mother.
🎶 1896 — A National Audience
At the Indian National Congress session in Calcutta, Rabindranath Tagore sang Vande Mataram.
This helped the song reach a much wider Indian audience.
🔥 1905 — A Slogan of Freedom
The Partition of Bengal led to the Swadeshi and anti-partition movement.
On 7 August 1905, people in Calcutta raised the cry “Vande Mataram” during a major protest.
From this period, the words became a powerful political slogan.
🚨 The British Tried to Stop It
The British authorities tried to prevent people from chanting Vande Mataram.
Students were punished.
Protesters were arrested.
But the restrictions made the slogan even more powerful.
Vande Mataram became a symbol of resistance.
✊ Across India
The song and slogan spread beyond Bengal.
It was heard in protests and movements across India, including Barisal, Lahore, Bombay and Tuticorin.
In 1907, Madam Bhikaji Cama displayed the words “Vande Mataram” on the flag she raised at Stuttgart.
🇮🇳 1950 — National Song
After independence, Vande Mataram received a special place in India's national life.
On 24 January 1950, Dr. Rajendra Prasad announced in the Constituent Assembly that Vande Mataram, because of its historic role in the freedom struggle, would be honoured equally with Jana Gana Mana.
Jana Gana Mana became the National Anthem.
Vande Mataram became the National Song.
