Counting Every Indian,
One Click at a Time
Simple, Secure, and Citizen-Driven Census · Census 2027
For the first time in its history, India is conducting a fully digital census — empowering every citizen to participate directly, from their home, using a smartphone or computer. Census 2027 isn't just a count; it is a conversation between 1.4 billion people and the future of the nation.
What Is Census 2027 — and Why Does It Matter?
A Census is the official count of every person living in a country — recording who they are, where they live, and how they live. India has conducted a census every ten years since 1872, but Census 2027 breaks all precedent: it is India's first-ever digital, self-enumeration census.
Unlike past censuses where government enumerators went door-to-door filling paper forms, Census 2027 invites citizens to fill in their own household details online — a process called Self-Enumeration (SE). The data collected will directly shape government policies on health, education, employment, infrastructure, housing, and welfare schemes for over 1.4 billion people.
- Faster and more accurate data collection across 640,000+ villages and 4,000+ cities
- Reduces human error common in paper-based enumeration
- Enables real-time data verification and processing
- Empowers citizens to provide their own information directly
- Environmentally friendly — zero paper waste at national scale
- Supports India's broader Digital India and e-Governance mission
Step-by-Step: How to Do Your Self-Enumeration
Completing your Census self-enumeration is straightforward and takes just 15–20 minutes. Follow these nine simple steps to submit your household information securely.
Open your browser or Census mobile app and navigate to the official self-enumeration website.
🔗 se.census.gov.inEnter your registered mobile number. You will receive a One-Time Password (OTP) for secure, verified login — no separate account creation needed.
Select your State, District, Tehsil/Taluk, and Village or Ward from the drop-down menus to ensure your data is routed to the correct administrative unit.
Using the built-in geo-mapping tool, pin your house on the interactive satellite map. This replaces the traditional address verification process with precise GPS location tagging.
Answer the 33-question census questionnaire covering household structure, amenities, assets, and family members. The form can be saved and resumed later within the enumeration window.
Upon successful submission, the system generates a unique SE ID — your confirmation number and proof that your household data has been recorded in the national database.
Screenshot, write down, or copy your SE ID. It will also be sent to your registered mobile number. Do not lose it — it is required in the next step.
When the government enumerator visits your home between April 16–May 15, share your SE ID with them. This links your online submission to the official field record.
The field enumerator reviews your submission, confirms the details, makes any corrections if needed, and marks your household as verified in the system.
What Happens After You Submit?
Your submission starts a carefully managed verification chain to ensure India's census data is accurate, complete, and reliable.
Step A — Enumerator Field Visit
A trained government field enumerator visits your home during the verification phase (April 16 – May 15). They cross-check your self-submitted data against physical observation.
Step B — Data Confirmation or Correction
If your submitted data is correct, the enumerator confirms it. If there are discrepancies, corrections are made in real time through the enumerator's app with your consent.
Step C — Data Freezing
After verification, your household record is "frozen" — no further edits can be made. This locked data feeds into India's official census database.
Step D — National Data Compilation
All verified records are compiled into the national census dataset, used for planning government schemes, allocating resources, and drawing electoral constituencies.
India's first census was conducted in 1872 — over 150 years ago. Census 2027 will be the 16th census in India's history and the very first to go fully digital.
The 2011 Census covered 640,867 villages and 4,041 statutory towns, with over 2.7 million enumerators. The digital census aims to make the same process smoother, faster, and citizen-led.

Benefits of India's Digital Census
The shift from paper to digital reimagines how a democracy counts and serves its citizens.
Time-Saving
No waiting for enumerators. Fill the form at your convenience, any time during the window.
Accurate Data
You know your household best. Self-reporting reduces errors that arise from third-party interpretation.
Fast Processing
Digital data eliminates weeks of manual data entry. Results can be published much faster.
Secure & Confidential
Data is encrypted end-to-end. No personal information is shared with third parties or other departments.
Eco-Friendly
Eliminating paper forms at a national scale saves millions of tonnes of paper and reduces carbon footprint.
Better Planning
Precise, granular data enables targeted government schemes — MGNREGA, Ujjwala, PM Awas, and more.
Things Every Citizen Must Know
Participating online is encouraged but not mandatory. If you choose not to self-enumerate, a government enumerator will visit your home during Phase 2 to collect your information in person.
Every household in India will receive an official enumerator visit regardless of self-enumeration status. Self-enumeration simply makes the visit faster and more efficient.
Under the Census Act, 1948, all individual data is strictly confidential. It cannot be shared with police, income tax, or any other department. Census data is used only for statistical purposes.
Only use the official website: se.census.gov.in. The government will never ask for your Aadhaar OTP, bank account details, or passwords. Report suspicious activity to 1950 (Census helpline).
Common Service Centres (CSCs) across India will assist citizens with free self-enumeration. Locate your nearest CSC at locator.csc.gov.in or call the Census helpline.

Our Census, Our Development
Our Census, Our Development
Census 2027 is more than a government exercise — it is a national act of citizenship. When you fill in your household data, you are telling the government where schools need to be built, where hospitals are needed, which communities lack electricity, and which families need housing support.
Every scheme — MGNREGA, PM Awas Yojana, Ujjwala, Mid-Day Meal, Scholarship programmes — is designed, funded, and allocated based on census data. When you skip the census, you risk your community being undercounted and underserved.
Participate. Count. Matter. In a democracy of 1.4 billion, every single household counts — literally.
