Apple Pay Launches in India

💳 Who can use Apple Pay right now?

At launch, Apple Pay supports eligible Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Apple’s current list identifies Axis Bank as the supported Indian bank, with the list expected to expand as additional banks are added.

Users can add an eligible card directly through the Apple Wallet app or through the latest Axis Bank app.

📱 Which Apple devices are supported?

Apple Pay is currently available on:

  • iPhone

  • iPad

  • Apple Watch

Mac support is expected to follow.

🛍️ Where can you use it?

Apple says Apple Pay can be used at supported:

 🏪 Physical stores

 📱 Apps

 🌐 Websites

 💳 Contactless/NFC payment terminals

Apple has also announced support across a range of Indian merchants and payment networks, including retailers and apps such as Blinkit, Croma, Ixigo, Reliance brands, Tata 1mg and Zomato.

🔐 How secure is Apple Pay?

Apple says your actual card number isn't stored on the device or on Apple servers and isn't shared with merchants. Instead, Apple Pay uses a Device Account Number stored securely on the device.

Payments can be authenticated using Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode, depending on the device.

🇮🇳 What about UPI and RuPay?

The initial launch is card-based, with Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards supported. Apple Pay's India launch does not provide UPI as its payment method.

This means Apple Pay is not a replacement for UPI at launch. Instead, it gives eligible Apple-device users another way to use their supported credit cards.

⚡ How to set up Apple Pay

  1. Open Wallet on your iPhone.

  2. Tap the + button.

  3. Select the option to add a card.

  4. Add your eligible Axis Bank Visa or Mastercard credit card.

  5. Complete the verification process.

  6. Your card can then be used with Apple Pay.

For contactless payments, double-click the side button, authenticate, and hold the top of the iPhone near the contactless reader.
